See World Class Art at the La Quinta Arts Festival

Mitchell Sussman | November 4, 2011

The city of La Quinta has an ancient and archaic name and past. Founded in 1776 by Conquistadores led by Juan Baustista De Anza. In those days it was quite common for travelers from Mexico to stop every few miles on their pilgrimage to the Catholic Missions of San Gabriel, Riverside and San Bernardino. The present location happened to be fifth on the list of stops and consequently the name La Quinta which translated into Spanish as the fifth.

Surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains most residents at the time were the Cahuilla Indians, a tribe indigenous to the area and who remain in the valley and are quite active and prominent in the local community. Following Mexico’s independence from Spain, settlements in the area grew rapidly and records of such began to be collected in the early 1800′s.

The La Quinta Resort was a frequent resting place for Hollywood stars and for many years was the home of Frank Capra who wrote the screen play for “Lost Horizons” at his home there, became the first of its kind and was a popular watering hole and destination for Hollywood celebrities.

Today, perhaps the most popular place in La Quinta Village is Old Town, an exciting development located on Main Street which adjoins the Civic Center, the home of the La Quinta Arts Festival. Beginning in 1982 a group of civic minded individuals including then and first Mayor Fred Wolf were determined to create a La Quinta that would be, to quote Mayor Wolf, “the cultural and artistic center of the Coachella Valley, providing the community with the cultural and artistic offerings that are vital to a functional society.” Wolf and two other contributors created the La Quinta Arts Foundation in 1982. The Arts Festival is sponsored by Foundation and its partner, the City, which continues to sponsor a myriad of events in the area.

The La Quinta Arts Festival, which had its debut in 1983 had 50 artists and 1900 patrons including Red Skelton, was first held at the Desert Club Resort in La Quinta Village and has always been held within five miles of the original site. Today it’s held at the civic center adjoining Old Town and is ranked the 3rd best arts festival in the nation. Typically, it’s held in March of each year and features more than two hundred artists from 44 states and Canada and Mexico.

New at the festival in 2011 is the addition on the festival grounds of a restaurant and bar featuring an eclectic myriad of food and drink. My first time at the festival was in 2004 when I had the distinct honor of meeting many of the award winning artists. My wife and I have made a point of traveling from Los Angeles each year to attend the festival which continues to get bigger and more compelling each year. Planning is now in development for the 2012 season which is expected to be larger and better than ever.

Auckland Serviced Apartments Can Be A Second Home

Peter Smith | July 18, 2011

Serviced apartments have become the favorite among travelers who are looking for long term accommodation in Auckland. Serviced apartments are fully furnished apartments that are available for short term and long-term rentals. They have all the facilities of a hotel but are more convenient, spacious and their rates are cheaper. Most serviced apartments are conveniently located in the city and have access to restaurants, shopping malls and business centers.

Visitors who are looking for long term accommodation in Auckland will enjoy the comforts offered by service apartments because they are more spacious. There are many choices available: from a studio apartment, to a two or three bedroom unit or a house with several bedrooms. Each one features a separate kitchen, a properly equipped living and working area and bedrooms and bathrooms that are all elegantly furnished and accessorized.

Service apartments offer an atmosphere of being “home away from home.” Guests enjoy the flexibility of being able to cook their own meals. Enjoying home-cooked meals is one pleasure that is not offered by even the most luxurious hotels. Just as in their own homes, guests can hold parties for new-found friends in the comfort of their service apartments. They can cook the meals themselves or hire someone to do the cooking. For businessmen and their families who spend many weeks -even months- away from home, the “home away from home” environment takes the stress out of living in another place.

Businessmen and leisure travelers know that serviced apartments offer excellent value for money. There are no hidden ‘extras’ like drinks from the mini-bar and room service charges. Wireless internet access is usually included in the price. Guests who are staying for extended periods normally benefit from reduced prices. Business travelers save more money because they can host meetings in their “home away from home” instead of hiring a meeting room.

Serviced apartments are tastefully decorated and feature the same high standard contemporary furnishings that are often found in a hotel room. Guests will enjoy good quality bed linen, towels and toiletries. But they offer more: the kitchen is fully equipped and supplied with everything needed to cook the guests’ favorite dishes. There are also first class home entertainment facilities: TV, DVD, CD and the very latest in-room technology.

Guests of serviced apartments enjoy the same luxuries offered by hotels and the warmth and flexibility of a home. They are ideal for those who are looking for long-term accommodation in Auckland – either for a long business trip or a relaxing leisurely stay. They are also ideal for people who are relocating and can serve as an in-between home while they are searching for the right house to live in. Anyone who chooses to stay in a serviced apartment – for a night, a week, month or year – will experience a new dimension of living in a luxurious yet comfortable “home away from home” environment.

Have you been looking around for Auckland Serviced Apartments however you aren’t having much luck and are wondering what to do next? Then give the people at Quest Newmarket a buzz now!. Also published at Auckland Serviced Apartments Can Be A Second Home.

Ways To Keep Your Flight Costs Down When Visiting Rome

Greg Abbott | July 12, 2011

Rome has always been a hub for arts, culture, and religion even in ancient times. Nowadays, tourists flock to this old city for its food, historical sites like the Coliseum, religion, architecture, and of course its breathtaking art. Their hunger for this city seems unquenchable and Rome welcomes visitors all year round.

If you are one of those hoping to get a piece of Rome, then here are some tips for you. First, make sure to book your tickets way in advance. This will save you a lot of money as well as time and effort. Getting last minute tickets to Rome can be extremely expensive and hard. Going to an online site and clicking away at the date and time as well as departure and arrival airport will be a lot easier than lining up at the airport with a throng of people.

Before making a purchase, make sure to surf the net and compare prices. The best deals for reasonably priced tickets can be found this way.

Cheaper flights also occur during off-peak days, usually from Monday to Thursday. Weekend flights are more often pricier due to the heavy flight traffic on Saturday and Sunday.

Connecting flights are another cost saver, although not always. Sometimes it is cheaper to fly on broken flights rather than travel directly to Rome so keep your eyes open.

Purchasing round-trip tickets are another money-saver. These will usually cost lower than buying the tickets to fly there then to get back separately. Sometimes, airlines will add a bonus where you can use the same ticket to visit another European city.

July and August are off-peak months as the weather is not very favorable at this time. Visitors are treated to hot and sticky conditions. On the other hand, if you want to save money, that might be the time to visit as prices on everything, including airline tickets, tend to be lower.

If you are traveling with a senior citizen or a student, or if you are any one of those, then you get a discount on your ticket. Some airlines also offer discounts to people studying the culture of Rome. Just ask if you happen to be one of those scholars.

If you’ve ever heard of an online auction for airline tickets, you might want to hunt around for those as well. Though a less frequent method for acquiring cheaper tickets, it’s one way you might be able to get tickets that cost close to nothing – a way for airline companies to thank their loyal customers.

Eliza, you will work up an appetite for your supper. For convenient accommodation in Perth book somewhere close to the attractions you want most to experience to save time searching by car or money hiring taxis.

Useful Information On Vacations In Pitlochry, Scotland

Andrew Kelly | February 18, 2011

Scotland is a varied nation, delightful countryside with a plentiful number of majestic sites, castles, country houses, historical buildings and fortified houses contrasted by areas of dense population which has oodles of top of the range tourist attractions including some of the most stunning museums and galleries in the British Isles. In the article below I talk about the town of Pitlochry, a very popular vacation destination.

The small town of Pitlochry is located on the banks of the River Tummel in the council area of Perth and Kinross in Scotland. Known throughout the world as the “Gateway To The Highlands” the town is tremendously popular with hikers, hill-walkers, ramblers, mountain climbers and other people of that kind. Of course plenty of more activities of this ilk can be thoroughly enjoyed in the area and you will also find a large amount of local attractions to visit. Because of this huge appeal there is a large number of hotels in Pitlochry, which are situated mostly on the high street of the town.

Places To Visit In Pitlochry

Blair Castle: Dating back to the 13th century, Blair Castle is the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. The building of Blair Castle began in the year 1269, under the supervision of John I Comyn, the Lord of Badenoch, a northerly acquaintance of the Earl of Atholl. The Earl was absent, fighting in the Crusade’s, when John I Comyn began to build of Blair Castle on his land. As soon as he returned the Earl complained to the king of Scotland, Alexander III about his neighbor, and his lands were returned. Rather than pulling down the tower than John I Comyn had erected, the Earl decided to incorporate the tower into his own castle. A Great Hall and a number of vaulted chambers were added to the castle over the centuries, by subsequent Earls. It was the 2nd Duke of Atholl who, in 1740, decided to renovate the castle as a Georgian Mansion.

Killiecrankie Visitor Centre: During the era of the Jacobites Killiecrankie, not too far from Pitlochry, was full of the sounds of battle. The government soldiers were heavily overwhelmed by the rebel soldiers of the Jacobites, under the leadership of Bonnie Dundee. During the bloody battle a soldier evaded capture by leaping over the River Garry, which subsequently became known as, Soldier’s Leap. The area around the gorge and pass were a popular place of Queen Victoria. To discover facts about the famous battle you can visit the Killiecrankie Visitor Centre. The center has a collection of otherpresentations and services, which include; ranger service’s, guided walks and a natural history of the area, amongst others.

Pitlochry Hydro-Electric Power Station: A power station is a bizarre place for a visitor center, but this is just where you can discover the Scottish Hydro Electric Visitor Center. The visitor center is found within the resplendent Pitlochry Power Station, and features interactive exhibits which trace the history of hydro power in Scotland, starting in the 1940′s up until the present day. The Pitlochry Dam(built nineteen forty seven to nineteen fifty one) gives visitors the interesting opportunity to observe the famous salmon ladder through three observation chambers. Once inside the Scottish Hydro Electric Visitor Centre, you will also discover interactive and audio-visual presentations which explains in detail this naturally occurring spectacle. The turbine hall of Pitlochry Hydro-Electric Power Station can also be seen from inside the Visitor Center.

If you are considering taking a vacation in Scotland based in Pitlochry then you will find Pitlochry bed and breakfast online by by placing “Pitlochry hotel accommodation” or “Pitlochry bed and breakfast” into your favorite search engine (the inverted commas can help a great deal).
