The History of CountryLink Parkes Elvis Festival

James Martin | November 15, 2009

The first CountryLink Parkes holiday was held on January ’93 in the town of Parkes, Central New South Wales. It is found 365 Kilometers west of Sydney, Australia. Lots of the eleven thousand towns folk are passionate about Elvis Presley but one man in particular is extremely keen about Elvis.

He was fascinated with the King when he was only five years old, after watching ‘Love Me Tender’ staring Elvis, that was in’59. He started his Elvis mementos collection at this age. But when he turned 16, he became even more keen about Elvis. In ’97, Neville and his wife Debbie made the trip to ‘Graceland’ the famous home of Elvis in Tennessee, USA, they returned home with 6 suitcases of keepsakes and Neville ‘deed polled’ his legal name to ‘Elvis’ with his Mother’s permission.

Neville and Debbie have a room in their place about the dimensions of a garage that is set up with nothing but Elvis mementos. Each year during the CountryLink Parkes festival, the room is open to the general public to view all the entrancing items he has picked up.

The month of January was picked for this festival as it would coincide with Elvis’ birthday of January 8th, and because it was the slow tourism time for the town.

The first year the holiday was given, it only lasted one night and over a few hundred folks attended. In the 10 years that followed, 1 or 2 more events had been added and a few hundred folks attended every year.

In 2004 and 2005, some new council members stepped in and had new visions and ideas. Now it has grown to 8,000 folks in 2008 that participated in the festival and more than eight thousand attended in 2009. The festival has grown in many ways, now the festival starts on Wednesday and last thru Sunday. The Festival has now more than 120 individual events during those five days.

The event starts in Sydney on the CountryLink Elvis Express train that takes folks to Parkes. They’re serenaded by Elvis the whole train trip. The majority of the major events are booked Thu. through Sunday, like the ‘Elvis Concert’ and the ‘Elvis Gospel Church Service’ and plenty more.

To keep your memory of the CountryLink Parkes Elvis festival alive all year, there’s a special calendar you may purchase from www.festivalcalendar.com.au.

Finding the Right Luggage Set for an Individual’s Needs

Yusef Shiseck | November 14, 2009

When it’s time to get new luggage, there several things to consider. For instance it will depend on where you plan on traveling, how long you will be gone, how you get there and of course what you need to pack. Each one of these will give you a first hand look at what type of design is needed and the materials used to construct it.

When you travel on a commercial airline, luggage that will be checked in should be crafted from quality materials and have sturdy construction. This luggage should be durable so that anything inside is protected from rough handling by baggage handlers. These concerns aren’t as relevant for carry-on luggage, which can be made of lighter weight materials.

The good news is finding a good luggage set isn’t hard. There is a wide variety available. Keep in mind though, the lower the price the lower the quality, and vice versa. You can still occasionally find a few good ones that cost less. If you don’t travel that frequently, you don’t need an especially expensive set, nor are you likely to be inclined on spending too much money. For a frequent traveller, tougher luggage is vital and that likely means a higher price level.

One important part of a good luggage set you need to look at is the zippers. You want zippers that are double or triple stitched with strong thread. Check to see if the zipper slides back and forth easily or if they stick and hang. Is the zipper metal or plastic? Plastic zippers might be more prone to breaking. The zipper may look trivial, but these little things could make a major impact on your traveling.

Though sometimes overlooked, handles are an important consideration. You don’t want to struggle to hang onto your luggage. Handles should be of a design and material that is easy to grip. Lift-up handles should slide up easily and lock in place. It should also be easy to unlock and slide back down out of the way. Don’t make the mistake of overlooking this important feature when you are buying luggage sets.

In most luggage sets now days, at least one piece of the set will have wheels of some type. The most common types of wheels used are ball bearing wheels. These are not as visible and tend to be more maneuverable. Ball bearing wheels are usually made of metal. Castor wheels are not as common any more but can still be found. Some are fixed castors that do not corner as well, while other castors allows each wheel to turn independently. Castor wheels are usually made of plastic or a plastic and metal combination. Sometimes, wheels made of rubber can be found. Each type of wheel has its good points and bad points and you will have to decide which you prefer when buying luggage sets.

There’s a large variety in luggage set materials. Your usual choices are thin vinyl, lightweight and heavyweight nylon, canvas, or leather. The one you choose will once again depend on the way you travel, for how long, and various other scenarios. For instance, if you travel a lot and want the most out of a good luggage set, then it needs to be durable like leather. If you are just going away for a weekend a few times a year, and driving rather than flying, then a lighter luggage set made of lightweight nylon should be fine. You also want to weather into account – it might be important that you buy a set whose construction is waterproof.

It comes down to a mix of what you need, and the price your comfortable paying. You can’t just buy the cheapest set if you’re frequently travelling long distances or by plane, and likewise if you don’t travel much you don’t need to waste money on getting the most super-durable luggage. Take the time to choose the materials and durability level you need based on your own personal needs. When you look at the big picture, you can save some money and future headaches if you purchase a good luggage set the first time around.

You’re A Twenty Minute Drive From The Alicante Airport To Hotels

Ken Morris | November 14, 2009

Sunshine in the Soul of Benidorm With its stable temperatures, Benidorm on the Costa Blanca has more than half the battle won to being one of the trendiest tourist places in Alicante on the Mediterranean Sea. I would most likely call it the Spanish melting pot due to others mixing with so many persons from the world over. You may try outstanding food from nations around the globe and vigorously feel a part of these countries’ customs – all in one city.

Benidorm, with its Arabian title, has almost the identical heritage as all other adjoining neighborhoods surrounding it: first the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and the Catholic Kings ruled. In addition, there still remains some of each person of these societies and there are Moorish, and Romanesque, treasures, to view but consider me, Benidorm who is left to ‘take a walk on the wild side.’

Recreation throughout the day on its long stretched out sandy shore and amusement galore at night. Benidorm, means a place of “sleeping well.” Yet the majority of people barely sleep there!

Smoothing Sailing in Benidorm You’re only a twenty minute drive in your rental car from the Alicante airport to one of the numerous hotels on the seashore, but the one that is most terrific is the Bali, four star and the highest hotel in all of Europe. It was launched twenty-four months ago and its front line style, airy ambiance, lavish rooms, and scenic side lifts will make anyone’s stay here more enjoyable. You may wish to visit nearby Altea since you have a rental car.

On the other hand, you have also come to have an agreeable vacation on the 3-mile wide beach in the bay of Benidorm. The beach is separated by what was a vast rocky projection, now crafted into the “Balcony of the Costa Blanca” sitting next to the Nautical Club. Consequently, looking at the map, the sandy shore to the right is named Levante and the one on the left Poniente. Levante is in front of the newer area with its energetic bistros turning out the food all day along with dance tunes. At the north end of the beach, you will soon appreciate all types of water sports. There is the long banana for the kids (and adults), water skiing and surf boarding.

On the other side of the terrace, you’ll locate the quieter, Poniente. It is a bit further from the center of the city. Another terrific benefit is that you can sunbath up to approximately 8:30 in the evening as the buildings are placed in such a way to allow you to ‘baste it’ while the sun sets. Additionally, there a small number of coves to be explored, for people who are seeking more privacy.

Ken Morris wrote especially for http://www.alicante-spain.com , a website on places to go in benidorm and video of benidorm. His comments on benidorm are found on his site .
