I was fortunate to have an experience early in 2008 while travelling with a group of dedicated businessmen through India to see how we could be more useful in our giving. I was blessed to have one exceptional happening that made me think about what ‘effectual giving’ actually meant.

We were travelling in a small town one day. Four of us had just called a taxi to take us to another nearby town. We dealt with the driver cautiously as our hotel staff had forewarned us about the possible swindle when they see that we were not local.

I congratulated him on having such a loving family and told him that I also had two children similar ages to his. When the others returned he spontaneously invited us to come to his house for lunch. I thought it was just a friendly courtesy he wanted to show at first. However, after dropping us off in the town centre, he insisted that he would wait for us until we finished our exploration in town. And he did. I was actually quite surprised to see him still waiting at the side of the road standing next to his taxi more than hour later. We jumped back into the taxi and he zoomed off up the road to where his family lived.

When we landed there we were quite surprised to see the way he was living. It was in fact quite similar (if not worse) to the existence of the slum dwellers we had visited before that. From the bright new taxi he was driving, who could have pictured this

As he reached the narrow open street in between shanties that were made with rough concrete blocks and mud walls, we felt guilty about accepting his invitation. For a brief moment I was nonplussed. “How could I accept the hospitality of this man who didn’t seem to have anything at all and I didn’t even bring any gift that could be a help to his family”, I told myself.

As we walked into his house, we saw a pan and small stove on the mud floor. His very shy wife nodded blushing in surprise and disappeared into the small storeroom (a cupboard size) next to it. As I looked in, I saw the next-door neighbours handing over some teacups to his wife over the crumbled concrete fence. They didn’t even have extra teacups in their house. There was only one small room fitted out with one single bed and an old galvanised chest next to it.

The taxi driver quickly pulled out three hand-woven rugs from the chest and rolled them out on the small patch of mud floor putting one on the bed.

Soon the cups of tea and some snacks arrived. All his children and children from the neighborhood came to see us and stood in the doorway. All six of us were totally squashed in the tiny room. I curiously asked him where all his children were sleeping. I thought they probably had another space somewhere. To my surprise, he cheerfully pointed the chest and said it was their bed with his beaming smile.

He happily told us that he was an amateur dancer in the town and showed us some plaques on the sill above the bed. Enthusiastic to show us his dancing proficiency, he ran outside all at once. From somewhere music came flowing into the tiny room. He had no apparatus for music within the house, it was coming from outside. Surprised, I looked around to see him reversing his vehicle towards the back of his house keeping the doors open with the radio of the car blaring forth!

The time quickly passed (dancing together and having more cups of tea) and it was finally time to say thank you for their great hospitality and head on our way. As we stood up to leave and thank him and his wife, he reached to the best looking rug on the bed, rolled it up and handed it to us. It was one of the only few things he had. I could not believe he offered it to us.

We all courteously begged off his gift and moved out waving goodbye to all the people waving back at us. We got real baffled about the whole affair. Should we have paid them something as they surely had only too little money? Should we have consented to take the cherished gift he made us?

As I was thinking about this awe-inspiring experience after a few days, I considered our begging off his gift. He looked crest-fallen that we didn’t accept the gift. It wasn’t only the rejecting of the gift that remained in my mind.

I understood that the sense of unease I felt was really ensuing from viewing him as unfortunate. I was perhaps thinking that I couldn’t possibly accept something from a person who had very little.

But did he really have so little? Maybe he had more – a lot more.

Maybe the real present we could have given him then was to receive his present in utmost deference and thankfulness.

All actions of gifting and getting are essential for us to fill our world with plenty and contentment equally for both giver and getter. We can begin doing this instead of assessing and defending one over the other. The perfect act of gifting and getting needs no further clarification.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

Wake-Back-To-Bed (WBTB)

Cycle Adjustment Technique

This was created by Daniel Love, and what it is, is setting your alarm to wake you up an hour and a half before your normal time. Once you’ve adjusted to waking up early, alternate your alarm to wake you up normally and early. During times you are to wake up normally, you’re body will already be ready to wake up early, and therefore, you will be likely to be awake in your dream.

Wake-initiation of Lucid Dreams (WILD)

This method was described before. If you would like to achieve a lucid dream this way, all you have to do is to keep your mind awake while you body falls asleep. This is perhaps the most interesting way of entering a lucid dream. It is as if you are getting ready to watch a movie. You are in the real world, you sit on your couch, you turn on the TV and press play (starting to sleep), the screen is black (in the same way as when your eyes are closed), and all you have to do is wait for the movie to actually start.

A number of ways to stay aware are counting, imagine climbing or descending stairs, chant, control your breathing, count your breaths, and concentrate on relaxing the body from their toes to head. The Philadelphia Church of God is a non-denominational Christian church. The church bases its teachings on the New Testament teachings of Jesus Christ, including the weekly Sabbath and holy days established in the Old Testament. The church also believes that God will save the vast majority of mankind from its sins and the penalty for sin. The church teaches that Satan is the current ruler of this world, rather than God. It believes that those who lived before Christ, those who died never hearing of His teachings, devout atheists and warring religions “humanity as a whole” will have a chance to accept what Christ taught when He returns, after mankind has proven it does not know the way to peace and embroiled itself in catastrophic war.

The church categorizes its activities into two commissions. The first is to proclaim to the world the good news of the coming Kingdom of God, and to warn about the disasters Jesus Christ said will precede His return. The second is to care for the members of the church itself. In support of its message to the world and its members, the church trains and provides ministers and publishes literature based on the Bible. It produces a Bible correspondence course, a newsmagazine and three other periodicals, and over 70 books and booklets. The church translates its materials into nine languages, produces a television program and supports an archeological excavation in Jerusalem’s City of David.

Most of this work is done on the PCG’s headquarters campus in Edmond, Okla. The campus is also the home of Herbert W. Armstrong College, Philadelphia Youth Camp, Imperial Academy, and the offices the Armstrong International Cultural Foundation, which produces a concert series that will soon debut in a new venue: Armstrong Auditorium. The Philadelphia Church of God was founded in’89 by Gerald Flurry, who serves as its pastor general. Gerald Flurry has been an ordained minister for over 35 years and formally served as a pastor in the Worldwide Church of God under Herbert W. Armstrong.

Mr. Flurry’s mother joined the Worldwide Church of God, led by Herbert Armstrong, in’57. “From that time until’61 she tried endlessly to convert me. I rebelled against that and persecuted her for what she was doing,” he wrote. “Whenever Herbert Armstrong came on the radio, she would turn up the volume so I could hear him, and that upset me. I was antagonistic against him and his message”that is, until my life had finally become so miserable and hopeless I would do anything to change it, even if it meant getting interested in ‘mom’s religion.” Mr. Flurry eventually came to believe in what Mr. Armstrong taught from the Bible, joined the church in’61 and was baptized. He wrote that since his father had not been taught how to teach him, he came to look to Mr. Armstrong as a father.

Barbara Jeanne Brewer joined the church in her late teens in St. Louis, Mo., and was baptized in the spring of’64. On November 15,’64, the two were married. They had a daughter, Laura, in’67 and later a son, Stephen.

Gerald Flurry attended Ambassador College in Pasadena, California, and graduated in’70. He briefly worked as a writer for the Plain Truth magazine, and then was ordained a minister in’73. He and his family moved to the Pasco, Wash., area in’75 and then back to the Oklahoma City area in’85 where he was a pastor of nearly 500 members. Mrs. Flurry was known to pop in on members with home-cooked meals, a helping hand in cleaning their homes, even tips on used furniture and houses. She was also known for her many phone calls and cards to brethren all over the world; one member in Washington State said, “It was like she lived down the street.”

When Herbert Armstrong died in’86, Mr. Flurry supported his successor, Joseph Tkach. However, when Mr. Tkach and his administration rejected Mr. Armstrong’s teachings and eventually fired Mr. Flurry for continuing to support them, Mr. Flurry founded the Philadelphia Church of God in’89. He established the Trumpet magazine in February’90, and a radio program that summer. He established The Key of David television program in January,’93. He founded a cultural foundation in’96, a college for church members in 2001 and a grade school in 2008.

Gerald Flurry founded the Philadelphia Church of God in’89. Mr. Flurry is also the face of the Key of David television program and is the editor in chief of the Trumpet news magazine.
