but after a few tantrums have been thrown, it can be very wearing for the child’s parent to have to deal with these tantrums. They can start at any age but commonly start at around’ to two years old, known as the terrible twos. Knowing how to deal with them can help to resolve the issue.

Either way for the parent, the child having a tantrum can be the source of much embarrassment, and knowing how to deal with it in front of other people, possibly in a strange house also adds more stress to the situation.

Blowing your top and screaming at your child will inflame the situation and may cause your child’s tantrum to get worse! So take a deep breath and speak slowly and calmly, rather than shouting. Try to reason with your child rather than throwing your weight around, you are much bigger and they may feel intimidated.

If the child sees you react to the tantrum, they may repeatedly throw tantrums just to get some attention and therefore a reaction from you as they will think it is funny.

it is far easier to stop the tantrum before it escalates too much then to stop a full blown one. If your child is a toddler then try to distract them and take their focus away for their source of anger.

Stick to your guns. If they are having a tantrum because you would not let them do something, the worst thing to do is to give in and then let them have it, just so that the tantrum stops. This will teach them that you will give them what they want if they misbehave.

For preschool children, taking time out or getting them to sit in the corner of a quiet room or bottom step of the stairs can be an effective way to resolve the tantrum. Make them sit there for a minute or so, not too long or they will not remember why they have been put there.

If you wish you can make older children sit there for a slightly longer time, perhaps till they have calmed down and worked out what they did wrong. This will not work for toddlers as their memory is not as developed.

Rather than just leaving the child to work out what they have done wrong, tell them why you are not happy with their behaviour. This will obviously only work with older toddlers who understand the concept of naughty. They will soon learn that naughty behaviour is not acceptable and that you will not react to it if they are naughty.

Sleep is essential, not only for children but also for adults. Nothing destroys the day easier, than the lack of a good nights sleep – especially if the sleep is disturbed several times in the night. Sleep is rejuvenating both body and soul.

A lot happens in both the body and the brain during sleep. What takes place in the brain during sleep, can be compared to how a computer is organized and kept tidy. For instance, files must be placed in the right folders, the hard drive must be defragmented now and then to avoid it becoming cluttered. Dreams are the equivalent to computer clean up programs, the consciousness is rinsed from old scraps and issues are dealt with in new and constructive ways.

Rest and sleep lets the body to regenerate muscles, cells and tissue. When we sleep the body produces and releases various substances in much greater quantity than when we are awake. This includes for instance growth hormones and hormones that regulate the milk production in lactating women.

If you, night after night, is awakened every time you have just fallen asleep, most people, as the nights go, becomes depressed, psychotic or have other psychiatric disorders. It is scary to think that this is used as a torture instrument. But it also tells us, that the parents must prioritize to get their sleep back, both for sake of the child, but also for the adults.

Although sleep is very important to all families, falling asleep and sleeping does not necessarily happen by itself for everyone. The first thing is to make sure you have a good place to sleep.

Sleeping

The child sleeps much dream sleep, called REM sleep. The type of sleep is shallow, and the baby is breathing irregularly, the eyes have quick, small movements behind closed eyelids (Rapid Eye Movements), and many babies wake up easily when they are in this stage. Most also easily falls back asleep. So wait a little, and don’t do anything until you have seen, if the child falls asleep again. Perhaps a slight humming is enough, or a gentle touch on the forehead or over the muzzle. For many children, the first superficial sleep well last 20 minutes to hour.

When a child is tired, it must be allowed to sleep. The child sleeps better if it has a clean diaper, is full and the temperature is pleasant. If it can be avoided, don’t accustom your baby to sleep with a breast or a pacifier in his or hers mouth. It is also unwise to accustom the child to hold the father’s or mother’s hand when it is about to sleep. Then the pacifier, the breast or the hands will be the signal to that now is the time to sleep for the child. Crying can also work the same way if the child gets used to cry before sleeping. The trick is to make the child falls asleep without any specific stimuli.

It is not good for any children for them to cry themselves to sleep. A child that cries must be comforted. If something is wrong, you must help the child. Food, clean diaper, less light or less noise or more security. Is the child sick, then you must consider what is wrong. Is it hot (signs of fever)? Is it cold? Is it a stomach ache? Is this constipation? Consider wether a health visitor or doctor should be contacted and asked for advice.

Aim for short fast sessions. – Teaching a baby to read requires several quick short sessions during the day. This means, you have some words that you want to teach your baby and you quickly show the words and put them away. This should take between 30 seconds and a minute. When you are ready to present some words, your goal should be to get it done. Flash the words and put them away. Do this 2 or 3 times per day. If you do this when baby wakes up, after a bath and after a diaper change, you are done for the day. This is not something you do all day.

Don’t bore your baby. – Your baby has the ability to learn as many languages as they are exposed to from birth to five years old. This means your baby is extremely intelligent. Don’t bore your baby by going too slowly. Show the cards around 15 times per word and move on. You can review, but be sure to include plenty of new material.

I like to use magnetic letters to create new words quickly. If my baby is eating waffles, I will grab the letters and assemble the word while my baby is eating. That way, she is making the connection that there is a word that describes what she is eating, and this is what it looks like. Every time you show your baby a word, you are helping them to make connections. Nothing you do is wasted and no word you show is useless. There is something to learn from every word. Your baby is learning about the patterns of the language with every word you show them.

Dry Erase Board – If you get the board for the magnetic letters, it is most likely a dry erase board. This can be another wonderful tool when used to create words and sentences on demand. You can write your baby notes while you hold them in your arms. I used to write my son all kinds of sentences on the dry erase board before he was one year old. I could see him following the text with his eyes, even though he couldn’t really speak. I would write, “Joshua is a boy,” or “Joshua is handsome.

1. First thing is diapers. You are going to go through a lot of these so I would pack one diaper for at least every 2 hours you are going to be away from the house.

2. One package of wipes. You don’t want to have to use the provided wipes, If they even do that, in the store or worse off be caught without any wipes. Bring a box of these along to clean your little one’s bottom.

3. A clean changing pad. These are included in most diaper bags now of days but make sure before you leave that it is actually in the bag and didn’t get taken out to be cleaned and not get put back in.

4. Diaper Rash Cream. A small tube will be fine for this. You could probably use the same method for getting diaper rash cream as you did for the baby wipes.

5. Burp cloths and extra clothes. You will need the burp cloths for spitting up and burping and if you have a really messy accident you will need the change of clothes. This goes for stuff coming out the front end and the back end.

6. It is a good idea to have a receiving blanket to be sure your baby stays warm if the temperature changes.

7. Baby Bottle. This gets a little tricky, if you are breastfeeding you want to make sure the milk is fresh. If you are using formula I would try to use the single use packets to bring along in the diaper bag.

8. Must have a toy. Pack at least one toy to distract your baby in the car seat or in the stroller.

9. Soft Blanket. Babies like familiar surroundings so giving them a familiar blanket will sometimes soothe them in an over stimulated environment.

10. Plastic bag for the soiled clothes and soiled diapers. Especially if you are cloth diapering you can’t forget this or you will regret it.

Contact information is another good thing to have in your bag. A simple business card will work fine. Having a card that has all of your pediatrician’s numbers on it and any other emergency numbers is a good idea also.

Having these things in your diaper bag will help you be prepared for just about anything. I did say just about so don’t get mad if you come across some crazy situation that I have no control over.

All these steps seem like a lot to do for just one simple bag. You don’t know it yet but you and this simple bag are going to be spending quite some time together. You best be prepared.
