Tunisia – A Short Guide For Tourists

Mark Walters | February 3, 2011

It is no secret that places that become popular with tourists are popular because of trends. When famous celebrities are photographed soaking up the sun or sitting on a yacht in a particular area, that area immediately gains a massive leap in popularity and tourists flock to the latest fashionable holiday spot. The question is, why? Why do the celebrities go to that particular area? What is it about the area that draws people in to begin with?

Some countries are continually popular with tourists year on year. Places such as the French Riviera, Greece and Spain and its islands in the Mediterranean Sea are continuously popular jaunts for tourists due to their widespread appeal. There are other countries, though, that are also popular for other reasons, not least of which because they offer something that nowhere else is able to offer. Tunisia is one of these places; able to provide tourists with an experience that is different from anywhere else.

Tunisia’s official name is the Tunisian Republic and is situated on the northern-most tip of Africa. Algeria and Libya surround Tunisia to the west and south-east respectively. While the southern part of Tunisia is mainly comprised of the Sahara Desert, the land around the desert is extremely fertile which helps with growing crops. Tunisia is also able to provide tourists with a massive eight hundred and ten miles of coastline with which to enjoy their holiday in the sun.

With such a massive coastline it is not surprising that Tunisia offers some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. Although Port el-Kantaoui is the most popular beach in Tunisia, it is actually a tourist complex that was built in 1979 and based on the French town of Port Grimaud. Tunisia is also famous for its clear waters and coral beds making it a perfect venue for scuba diving. Along with Port el-Kantaoui, another great beach to go diving is Monastir situated on the central coast of Tunisia.

Some of the highest grossing films of the 20th Century were filmed in Tunisia. Films such as Star Wars: A New Hope and The Phantom Menace (21st Century), Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The English Patient were all filmed in the canyons, caves and cities of Tunisia. In order to find the locations it may be best searching the internet for advice as it can be tricky. One place that is easy to find is the Star Wars Hotel, also called Sidi Driss which is located in Matmata. A small part of the film Star Wars: A New Hope was filmed in the courtyard for this hotel and some of the props are still present to this day.

Malaysia – Top 7 Beaches To Die For

Joseph Archibald | November 13, 2009

Perhentian Islands: When Leonardo Di Caprio chose Thailand to be the location of his movie, The Beach, he obviously has not heard of Perhentian Islands yet, or he would have chosen otherwise. In the North East Terengganu at East Coast of Malaysia you will find two islands lined with rustic beach huts by the shore. It has become such a popular destination for many tourists and beach lovers because of its pristine white sand and clear blue waters. You would not even mind that accommodation is not first class because the breathtaking view of the beach is even more divine than any luxury hotel can manage. A paradise like no other, Perhentian Islands is a great place for you to go.

Redang Island: This is another popular diving site in Malaysia, located not so far from Perhentian. It is the largest and also the most developed among the east coast islands and it is composed of nine islands. This place is designated as a marine park where many divers can enjoy the magnificent collection of coral reefs and other underwater creatures. The waters are very clear and teeming with a variety of species so visitors will enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving.

Langkawi Island: The UNESCO has recently awarded Langkawi Islands the geopark status. It is composed of ninety-nine islands and it is the site for the most luxurious hotels in Malaysia. Around forty minutes from the city of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi is a paradise that should be on top of your list of places to visit. Stay at the Four Seasons, The Andman, Casa de Mar and The Datai; and experience paradise in different way.

Pangkor Laut Island : Off the coast of Perak State, north of Selangor , lies a cluster of fabulous islands with unquestionably some of the best coves and beaches on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia. Among them, two islands predominate in terms of accessibility, infrastructure and development – the largest island, Pangkor and her sister Pangkor Laut. Upon the island of Pangkor Laut is the Pangkor Laut Resort which is renowned as one of the best hotels in Malaysia, if not the world. It has won a number of awards over the past decade and for this alone the islands are well worth a visit!

Tioman Island: This place is popular for its beautiful soft and sandy beaches, where a great collection of underwater creatures and coral reefs can be found. It is a magnificent location to go snorkeling and even hiking, and while you are there you can stay at the Japamala Resort.

Rawa Island: Only a few miles from Tioman Island and offering similar luxuries is that of Rawa Island. This is privately owned and there is only one hotel on the island which may seem very limiting. However, its very exclusive and somewhat untouched.

Sipadan Island: Rated as one of the top five diving spots in the world, Sipadan Island is situated just off the coast of Sabah, Borneo – Malaysia’s eastern island, and previously known as North Borneo. The island did have a reputation as being a hunting ground for pirates but now its known not for its piracy but for its wonderful and luxurious beauty.

Leigh Jackson | November 12, 2009

Charleston West Virginia has not always been a popular well-known city to go to. Certainly, Charleston is very alluring in a quaint way. Though it’s not the kind of destination that thrives with life day and night, discovering Charleston will tell you that the city has so much to offer. In one way, Charleston West Virginia has become quite a secretive place for recreation for local residents and adjacent neighbors. Anybody who has visited the Charleston Metropolis will tell you that it’s among the friendliest cities in the States. In addition to that, it also boasts a very rich culture and history. Surprisingly, many people are surprised by the treasures that the downtown area presents.

It offers a bunch of wonderful attractions to the visitors. It is highly improbable that someone does not visit the impressive State Capital Complex whether or not she is in the town solely for few hours. You are surely going to encounter the rarest Black squirrels over there. For the past inquisitiveness, you can head toward the State History Museum. The grandeur of “Lincoln Walks within the night” statue also interests the visitors. Variegated festivals in summer are good opportunities to understand the culture and life of people within the city.

West Virginia State Capitol Building

Similar to other states, Charleston’s capitol building serves both as a stamp of the state’s culture and as a historic landmark, which showcases the rich history of the city and the state. The State Capitol Building is unique because it’s positioned by the Kanawha River and was specifically designed by architect Cass Gilbert, the same man who designed the US Treasury Building and the US Supreme Court Building in Washington DC. The capitol is not just a stunning landmark, it is also filled with the state’s information on history and culture. West Virginia played an important role in the American Revolution and the colonization of the United States. This and a lot more will be experienced in the downtown area of Charleston.

Food and Shopping

Charleston is also a culinary city. It’s got a very wide range of dishes that will have something new to offer. Whether you want Mexican, Chinese cuisine, Japanese cuisine, or simply American food, Charleston’s restaurants surely have them. Of course, let’s not ignore shopping. Although it isn’t a very acclaimed shopping destination, it has some local arts and crafts to offer.
